Our mission is to promote the advancement of quality welding in the industry and to teach welding to those who are interested. We pride ourselves in offering our students a program and environment in which they can learn different welding processes and develop their skills to meet industrial standards.
Mr. Smerglia has been the Director since 1979. He was graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Industrial Management. Mr. Smerglia specializes in Industrial Training Programs in Welding and has developed programs for, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company (Des Moines, Memphis), Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, B. F. Goodrich Company, J. M. Smucker's Company, J & L Specialty Products, etc. The Director has been involved in the welding industry for over twenty years. He received his certificate of compliance from the State of Ohio Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Mechanical Inspection and Licensing for Destructive Testing of Welds in 1974, and from the State of Ohio Department of Highways in 1969.
In June of 1988, he received his certification as a Welding Inspector under the American Welding Society Standard QCI - 88, SECTION 6.1 of the AWS WELDING CODE. He also received a Level II Proficiency rating for Ultrasonic Examination from the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing. Mr. Smerglia has completed courses of study from the American Welding Society School of Welding Technology, The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, and the Metals Engineering Institute.
The Institute's administration has developed a system to aid in curriculum revision and adjustment of its program of study through its Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is made up of the Institute's Director, three (3) members of the local welding industry (employers) and a member of the student body. The five (5) member board meets three (3) times a year to review the curriculum and make recommendations for adjustments and improvements.
To be a faculty member at Akron Testing Laboratory and Welding School, you must be currently employed in the welding industry or retired, with at least ten (10) years of experience with the processes to be taught and a high school diploma (G.E.D.).
